Hoya fungii (white)

Hoya fungii (white) is the selected form of the accepted species Hoya fungii, a vine native to southern China and Indochina, with large, oval or elliptic leaves and prominent veins. The white label identifies the selection sold for its white, fragrant umbels. In the species, flowers may be white or pink, depending on light and temperature. The vines can be trained on a support or allowed to trail. A rewarding houseplant with simple care requirements.

Foliage and growth. The foliage is large, ovate, elliptic or oblong, leathery, with a rounded base and acute tip. The lateral veins are prominent, usually numbering around seven pairs. Botanical descriptions treat the plant as glabrous outside the inflorescence; not all specimens have fuzzy foliage. Without flowers, the white form resembles the Dark Pink form. It has a vining habit and can be grown on a support or as a trailing plant.

Flowers and fragrance. The white selection is sold for its white, star-shaped umbels with a pale yellow corona. Flora of China describes the species' corolla as white; horticultural sources also note shades of pink, depending on growing conditions. The label does not guarantee a completely white umbel with every flowering. The flowers are fragrant, although intensity may vary. Flowering depends on plant maturity and growing conditions.

Botanical identity. Hoya fungii Merr. is an accepted botanical name, published in 1934. The common names Lady's Tears, wax flower, and porcelain flower are commercial labels for Hoya, not botanical synonyms.
