Hoya erythrostemma 'ut 048'

Hoya erythrostemma is a climbing species from Indochina, with elliptical foliage, lighter veins, and new growth that can become reddish in bright light. The flowers are small and star-shaped, with a white or pinkish, reflexed corolla and a red-burgundy corona; they appear in dense umbels and are described as fragrant. The plant circulates under collection number UT 048. It can be trained on a support or allowed to trail.

Foliage and growth. The foliage is elliptical, with a pointed tip, thick, dark green leaves and lighter veins. Mature leaves are usually 10–15 cm long. New growth can take on a red hue in bright, filtered light. The vine is quite slender: guide it onto a support or allow it to hang.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are approximately 1 cm across, with a white or slightly pinkish, reflexed and hairy corolla and a red or burgundy corona. They appear in round umbels, usually with 20–40 flowers, and last for approximately one week, sometimes longer. In our catalog, the blooms are listed as fragrant; specialist descriptions do not always provide a precise fragrance note.

Botanical identity and origin. Hoya erythrostemma Kerr is an accepted botanical name, published in 1939. The species is native to Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam, where it grows as a vine in a humid tropical biome. We do not treat it as Hoya mindorensis.
