Hoya endauensis D6

Hoya endauensis is an accepted botanical species, published in 1989 by Ruth Kiew. Its native range is the state of Johor in Peninsular Malaysia. It is a compact, climbing epiphyte or lithophyte with small, medium-green to dark-green foliage. The leaf margins are often wavy. The flowers are small, hairy, yellow-orange, with a pink corona. The fragrance can be subtle and variable in cultivation. Species of this kind are rarely encountered.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are small, generally up to about 3 cm long, medium green or dark green. The blade may be ovate, with a wavy margin; some clones have entire margins. The vines are thin and brittle and may be damaged during transport or handling. It has no splash and no variegation.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are approximately 0.8 cm across, with hairy, yellow-orange petals that become fully reflexed at maturity. The corona is pink, darker toward the center. The fragrance can be subtle. Flowering depends on the plant's maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The accepted name is Hoya endauensis Kiew, Malayan Nature Journal 42: 261 (1989). The species is endemic to Johor and is associated with humid forests, often growing on trees along rivers in the Endau area. It is sometimes confused with Hoya kanyakumariana, a separate accepted species native to Tamil Nadu. Taiwan does not alter its native range.
