Hoya coronaria 'Red' (large, fragrant flowers)

Hoya coronaria 'Red' is the red-corolla selection of the accepted species Hoya coronaria, a vigorous vine native to southern Thailand and western and central Malesia. The foliage is elliptical, thick, green, with a pubescent underside. The flowers are large for the genus, star-shaped, waxy, and fragrant mainly at night. Red refers to the color of the corolla, not to a separate taxon and not to the Red Corona label. In cultivation, it grows extensively before its first flowering.

Foliage and growth. The foliage is elliptical and thick, with slightly recurved margins and a pubescent underside. The vine is vigorous and branches readily; in cultivation, it can reach several meters. A young specimen needs time before displaying its mature habit. In this lot, the plant is young, with green shoots and glossy elliptical leaves. Vine length varies from one specimen to another.

Flowers and fragrance. The species' flowers are star-shaped and waxy, grouped in umbels. The 'Red' selection is sold for its red corolla; in this lot, it has glossy red lobes and a cream corona with a dark center. At species level, the color varies from creamy white and yellow to pink or red, sometimes with spots. The flowers are fragrant mainly at night; intensity may vary. In cultivation, flowering usually begins after the vine has grown sufficiently. Flowering depends on the plant's maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The accepted botanical name is Hoya coronaria Blume, published in 1826–1827. The species is native to Thailand, Malaya, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Sulawesi, and the Philippines. In horticulture, it is placed in section Eriostemma; Eriostemma coronarium is a synonym, not a separate genus on this product page. 'Red' remains a label for the corolla color, distinct from Red Corona, which refers to the color of the corona.
