Hibiscus moscheutos 'Extreme Magenta' is a spectacular outdoor perennial Hibiscus, notable for its very large flowers in intense magenta-pink shades, which appear successively throughout the summer. The flowers have a tropical appearance, with broad, slightly overlapping petals and a prominent staminal column that contrasts strongly with the green foliage.

Unlike tropical Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis), Hibiscus moscheutos is a cold-hardy perennial plant, suitable for permanent cultivation in the garden. The above-ground growth dries out in autumn after the cold arrives, and the plant enters dormancy. In spring, it starts growing again from the base and can form a vigorous clump with numerous flowering stems in a single season.

🌿 Botanical characteristics

  • Name: Hibiscus moscheutos 'Extreme Magenta'
  • Common names: Garden Hibiscus, Swamp Hibiscus, Hardy Hibiscus
  • Family: Malvaceae
  • Plant type: herbaceous perennial
  • Erect, bushy and well-branched habit
  • Large green leaves with prominent veins
  • Very large flowers in intense magenta-pink shades
  • Abundant flowering during the warm season
  • Buds form successively along the stems
  • The above-ground growth disappears during winter and regrows in spring from the root area

🌞 Growing conditions and care

  • Light: prefers direct sunlight, ideally at least 6 hours per day. Abundant light supports vigorous growth and prolific flowering.
  • Substrate: fertile and rich in organic matter, with good drainage. Unlike many other ornamental plants, Hibiscus moscheutos appreciates a substrate that retains moisture relatively well.
  • Watering: regular and abundant during the growing and flowering periods. It should not be allowed to dry out excessively, especially on very hot days.
  • Fertilization: regular during the growing season to support rapid growth and bud production.
  • Flowering: mainly in summer and early autumn. An individual flower lasts for a relatively short time, but a well-developed plant produces numerous buds successively.
  • Pruning: after the above-ground growth has dried out, the stems can be cut close to ground level, either in late autumn or at the end of winter.
  • Spring growth: new growth may begin relatively late in spring, sometimes after other garden perennials are already well developed. This behavior is normal.
  • Growing in pots: it can also be grown in large containers, but it requires more frequent watering and better protection of the root system during winter.
  • Cold hardiness: plants well established in the garden have good frost resistance, generally down to approximately -20°C, depending on the cultivar, drainage and local conditions. Young specimens and container-grown plants require additional protection.

🌱 Secret Garden recommendation

👉 For Hibiscus moscheutos, we recommend a fertile substrate rich in organic matter, loose and with good water-retention capacity, without allowing water to remain permanently stagnant around the roots.

When planting in the garden, a layer of mulch applied around the base of the plant helps retain moisture during summer and provides additional protection for the root system during the cold season.
