Dicksonia antarctica is a spectacular tree fern, valued for its exotic appearance and its lush, elegant foliage that instantly brings a tropical garden or rainforest atmosphere. Commonly known as the Tasmanian fern, this plant impresses with its architectural form, featuring a fibrous trunk and a rich crown of long, arching, highly decorative leaves. It is an excellent choice for terraces, courtyards, verandas, sheltered gardens, or rare plant collections, where it can become a truly special focal point.

🌱 Botanical characteristics:

  • Family: Dicksoniaceae
  • Plant type: tree fern, decorative for its leaves
  • Common name: Tasmanian fern
  • Form: upright, with a fibrous trunk and abundant foliage arranged in a crown
  • Leaves: long, finely divided, arching, ranging from fresh green to deep green
  • Trunk: brown, fibrous, very decorative, formed over time by the accumulation of plant debris and adventitious roots
  • Overall appearance: exotic, lush, and highly decorative, with a prehistoric plant look

💧 Growing and care conditions:

  • Light: prefers partial shade or filtered light; avoid strong direct sunlight, especially during peak hours
  • Watering: regular; the substrate should be kept consistently slightly moist, without prolonged drying
  • Substrate: rich in organic matter, fresh, well-drained but able to retain moisture
  • Humidity: appreciates high atmospheric humidity and a cool environment, protected from very dry air
  • Temperature: optimal growth range: approximately 10-24°C
  • Maintenance: requires protection from strong wind, excessive dryness, and severe cold; the crown and trunk should not be allowed to dry out completely
  • Frost resistance: up to about -5 / -7°C, for short periods and under good conditions with serious protection; in pots it needs winter shelter.

🌱 Secret Garden recommendation:

👉 For stable growth and healthy roots, we recommend Secret Garden professional substrate, based on peat, pine bark, perlite, and coconut fiber. It ensures excellent drainage and optimal aeration for epiphytic ferns.

What makes it special:

  • has a spectacular exotic look, rarely seen in ordinary gardens
  • quickly creates a tropical and lush effect in outdoor or sheltered indoor settings
  • ideal for shaded terraces, courtyards, forest-inspired areas, or special botanical corners
  • its large, elegant foliage adds texture and volume to the decor
  • is a collector’s plant with a strong visual impact

📌 Note: Leaves may show small natural imperfections, slightly marked tips, older leaves partially dried, or fine marks from handling and transport. Depending on the season, the plant may have mature leaves, developing leaves, or may start growing more slowly. These aspects are normal for this type of fern and do not affect the plant’s viability.
