The late flowers are always single. The plant's name is pronounced Pee-loo - translated it means Little Duckling.

Clematis 'Piilu' was developed in the early 1980s in Estonia by the late Uno Kivistik, a respected grower and breeder of clematis. 'Piilu' was created through an extensive breeding program managed and led by the Kivistik family, seeking very hardy clematis varieties for the Baltic countries and Eastern Europe. From the start, it was a popular plant due to its robust and prolific nature, and in the milder climate of Western Europe, it was found to bloom with double flowers from the woody growth of the previous year.

The plant can be treated as a lightly pruned type of clematis - pruning is done at the end of winter or early spring. Leaving a neat and tidy structure of the previous year's growth at 60-90 cm from the ground, the plant will produce double flowers, and after the flowering period ends, removing faded flowers or a general cleaning will encourage new shoots to appear, from which it will bloom again in late summer and autumn.

The flowers of clematis 'Piilu' measure between 5-10 cm in diameter, but the smaller size is compensated by the quantity and the stunning appearance of the flowers.

This variety reaches a final height of about 1.5-1.8 meters.

Classification: Early Large-flowered Group

Growing recommendations:

Large-flowered clematis prefer good quality soil, with high nutrient levels and good moisture, but well-drained - they do not tolerate waterlogged soils where water stagnates.
