Botanical characteristics:

  • Flowers: Up to 22.5 cm long (the longissima forms can reach approximately 50 cm from tip to tip). Greenish-yellow, with brown spots or veins, and long, slender sepals and petals resembling spider legs. Pleasant, sweet fragrance, more intense in the evening. Usually 6-15 flowers on an arched or pendulous basal stem, up to 60 cm long.
  • Growth habit: Medium to large plant, with laterally flattened pseudobulbs featuring sharp edges, and a single elliptic apical leaf. Hot-cool growing, epiphytic.
  • Distinctive features: A variable species, even within the same inflorescence. The flowers mimic a spider and attract pollinating wasps. Common synonym: Brassia longissima.
