Begonia grandis, commonly known as hardy begonia, perennial garden begonia, or Hardy Begonia, is one of the few begonias that can be successfully grown in the garden year-round in many regions of Romania. It is appreciated for its decorative foliage, often with reddish hues on the underside, and its delicate pink flowers, which appear from the second half of summer and continue into autumn.

Its elegant, natural appearance makes it ideal for shady gardens, woodland areas, borders, or cooler corners where many other flowering plants struggle to thrive.

🌱 Botanical characteristics:

  • Family: Begoniaceae
  • Plant type: perennial, decorative for its leaves and flowers
  • Common names: hardy begonia, perennial garden begonia, Hardy Begonia
  • Habit: upright, with a clumping growth habit
  • Leaves: large, heart-shaped, deep green, with a reddish underside
  • Flowers: small, delicate, in shades of light pink
  • Flowering: from August until the first frosts

💧 Growing conditions and care:

  • Light: prefers partial shade or bright shade
  • Watering: moderate; the soil should be kept slightly moist
  • Substrate: rich in organic matter, fertile, and well-drained
  • Humidity: prefers soil that does not dry out completely for long periods
  • Temperature: optimal growing range: 15-28°C
  • Maintenance: the above-ground part dries back in autumn and reappears in spring from the underground tubers
  • Frost resistance: down to approximately -15 / -20°C, under good conditions and with a protective layer of mulch; in very cold areas, additional winter protection is recommended

🌱 Secret Garden recommendation:

For vigorous growth, plant Begonia grandis in humus-rich, well-drained soil, in an area protected from strong midday sun.

What makes it special:

  • one of the few frost-resistant begonias
  • blooms in late summer, when many other plants have finished flowering
  • decorative foliage with a reddish underside
  • ideal for shady and naturalistic gardens
  • easy to propagate through bulbils formed at the base of the leaves

The plant’s appearance varies significantly depending on the season. In spring, it may begin growing later, while during the cold season the above-ground part disappears completely. This behavior is normal for the species and does not affect the plant’s viability. Depending on the time of year, specimens may be delivered without flowers.

📌 Note: Begonias are sensitive and fragile plants. The foliage may arrive with noticeable cosmetic damage after transport, including spotted leaves, bent stems, partially broken stems, scorched edges, dry patches, or damage caused by rubbing and handling. These aspects are considered normal for this category of plants and do not affect the specimen’s viability, provided that the plant has a healthy base. We recommend purchasing these begonias only for people who understand the sensitivity of terrarium plants and can provide high humidity, stable temperatures, and indirect light.
