Cocoa shell mulch is an ideal organic option for garden or potted plants, belonging to a wide variety of categories. Its high nitrogen content recommends it as a biological and environmentally friendly fertilization option with high efficiency, while its toxicity to invertebrates significantly helps in pest control.
In agricultural practice, especially horticulture as an integral part of it, it is often recommended to amend soils and growing substrates with mulch, both in individual containers (pots, containers, window boxes) and in garden cultivation. Mulch is an addition of organic or inorganic substances, with various roles in supplementing or preserving certain steady parameters of the soil. The roles fulfilled by mulch are as follows:
To prevent water evaporation, extending its availability at the root system level;
To provide a filter, a thermal buffer, which increases the soil’s resistance to temperature changes, reducing the warming process during the warm season and respectively, the cooling and thus freezing during winter;
To control, influence, and maintain, when applied in appropriate proportions, an optimal soil pH;
To contribute nutrients released through natural, biological, organic processes, unlike chemical fertilizers, and to provide nourishment resources for cultivated plants, helping soil regeneration. In other words, applying mulch extends, in the case of potted plants, the time needed before changing the substrate;
To prevent the growth of unwanted plant elements (weeds), both in open cultivation and in growing containers;
To allow the development of beneficial microorganisms that contribute to and support soil processes (soil formation through the decomposition of plant matter);
To provide protection against pests, especially when combined with other elements, such as ground eggshells, which on one hand are an important amendment for supplementing soil calcium, but also help combat harmful gastropods (snails and slugs);
To prevent the formation or spread of fungal diseases by avoiding spraying plants during irrigation;
