Mammillaria longimamma is a species of cactus from the Cactaceae family, native to the arid regions of Mexico. This cactus is known for its distinctive appearance and unique characteristics:

  1. Shape and size: Mammillaria longimamma has a globular or cylindrical shape, reaching a diameter of about 10 cm and a height of up to 12 cm. Its stem is light green and covered with large, elongated tubercles (protuberances), from which the name "longimamma" (long nipples) derives.

  2. Spines: The tubercles are covered with short, thin spines, white or yellowish in color, but they are not very dangerous. Some of the spines may be longer, forming a decorative structure around the stem.

  3. Flowers: One of the most beautiful features of this species is its large, bright yellow flowers. These flowers appear at the top of the tubercles and can have a diameter of up to 4 cm. Blooming generally occurs in the summer season.

Light: Mammillaria longimamma prefers direct or partial sunlight. Place it in a spot where it receives plenty of natural light, such as a south- or west-facing window.

Water: This cactus species is drought tolerant. Water it moderately during the growing season (spring and summer), waiting for the soil to dry completely between waterings. During winter, reduce watering considerably or stop completely, as the plant enters a dormant state and excess water can cause root rot.

Soil: Use a well-drained substrate, specially made for cacti and succulent plants. A suitable mix can include cactus soil, coarse sand, and fine gravel to allow good drainage. Avoid soils that retain too much water to prevent rotting.

Temperature: Mammillaria longimamma prefers warm temperatures during summer (20-30°C). In winter, it is important to keep it at cooler temperatures (5-10°C) to ensure its dormancy. However, it must be protected from temperatures below 0°C, as it does not tolerate frost.

Fertilizer: During the growing period (spring and summer), you can use a special fertilizer for cacti once a month. Choose a fertilizer with low nitrogen content and rich in phosphorus and potassium.

  • Do not fertilize the plant during the resting period (autumn and winter).

Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years, depending on the plant’s growth. Choose a pot slightly larger than the previous one, with drainage holes. When repotting, check the roots for signs of rot and remove any damaged parts.

Common problems

  • Root rot: Occurs due to overwatering or poor drainage. Check roots when repotting and adjust watering accordingly.
  • Pests: Mammillaria longimamma can be attacked by woolly aphids or mites. If you notice such pests, treat the plant with specific insecticides or neem oil.
