Hoya rotundiflora Rodda & Simonsson is an accepted species from Myanmar, known in horticulture as “Square Leaf Hoya”. Its distinctive foliage consists of small, thick, oblong-pandurate leaves with slightly twisted margins, giving them an almost rectangular outline. The plant has pendulous to weakly climbing stems. The white flowers, with a cream to pale yellow corona, are grouped in convex umbels and have a subtle sweet fragrance. It is cultivated mainly for the contrast between its geometric foliage and rounded flowers.

Characteristics. The leaves are opposite, thick and leathery, approximately 3–5 cm long, with a dark green upper surface and a lighter green underside with darker margins. The midrib is prominent, while the secondary veins branch off at a wide angle, emphasizing the geometric pattern. The plant may grow pendulously or attach weakly to a support.

Flowers and fragrance. The inflorescences may contain up to approximately 20 flowers. The white corolla has recurved lobes, while the corona is matte white to pale yellow. The flowers have a mild sweet fragrance and may last for approximately one week in cultivation. The species name refers to the rounded appearance of the flowers, not the shape of the leaves.

Hoya rotundiflora was initially also marketed under the name Hoya lyi, but the original publication demonstrates that they are distinct species.

Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Substrate: Use an airy, well-drained mix suitable for epiphytic species. We recommend the professional substrate for Hoya and Anthurium - SG Mix.
