Hoya multiflora (SV-406)

Hoya multiflora (SV-406) is a collection number for the accepted species Hoya multiflora, an epiphytic shrub native from southern China to tropical Asia. The foliage is elliptical and elongated, with visible veins and scattered light spots. The growth habit is upright or slightly trailing, not that of a typical vine. The flowers are shaped like shooting stars: reflexed, creamy white corollas with yellow-orange tips and a white corona. They are fragrant. SV-406 is not a separate taxon.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are elliptical and glossy, with a distinct midrib. The light spots on the leaf blade are characteristic of this selection; they are not variegation and do not cover all the foliage. The growth habit is compact, upright, or slightly trailing. Shoot length varies from one specimen to another.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are reflexed, with a rocket- or shooting-star-like appearance. The corolla is creamy white with yellow-orange tips; the corona is white. They appear in dense umbels. They are fragrant; intensity may vary between blooms. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The accepted botanical name is Hoya multiflora Blume, published in 1823. The species is native from southern China to tropical Asia, including Java, Borneo, the Philippines, Thailand, Sumatra, Sulawesi, and New Guinea.
