Hoya kanyakumariana - mature specimens

Hoya kanyakumariana is an accepted small species with compact, obovate, olive-green foliage and wavy margins. It is native to southern India, in the Kanyakumari area of Tamil Nadu and the nearby slopes of the Western Ghats. The flowers are small, star-shaped, white or pale pink, with a white corona and purple center, and are fragrant. In horticulture, it is often confused with Hoya endauensis, but the two remain separate species. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Foliage and growth. The foliage is small and obovate, almost heart-shaped in some leaves, with a narrow base at the petiole and wavy margins. The color ranges from light green to olive green; the veins are barely visible. The plant produces slender vines with a compact habit, suitable for growing on a support or allowing to trail. Medium to high humidity and warmth support growth, but do not turn this species into a fast-growing vine.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are about 1 cm across, star-shaped and hairy, with a white or pale pink corolla and a white corona that becomes purple toward the center. They appear in small umbels. They are fragrant; sources vary between a musky note and a sweet one, so we do not assign a single profile or promise a specific intensity. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Botanical identity and origin. The accepted name is Hoya kanyakumariana A.N.Henry & Swamin., published in 1978 (appeared in 1979). The name comes from the collection locality, Kanyakumari. Its resemblance to Hoya endauensis from the Malay Peninsula explains the confusion; they are not synonyms.
