Euphorbia mayurnathanii f. variegata is a rare succulent plant in the Euphorbiaceae family, prized for its columnar appearance and unique variegation, with green and yellow stems. Considered extinct in the wild, native to the Palghat Gap region of India, this variety is cultivated for its exotic beauty and is ideal as an indoor plant, for succulent collections or rock gardens.

Appearance of leaves and flowers

  • Leaves : The leaves are small, green, delicate, and appear temporarily at the top of the stems, falling quickly but regenerating quickly. The stems are the main decorative element, of an intense green, with well-defined veins and yellow or cream variegation, variable on each branch, giving a unique appearance.
  • Flowers : The flowers are small, yellow, appear in summer, but are rare under indoor conditions. They have no significant ornamental value, the emphasis being on the variegated stems.

Growth characteristics

  • Height and width : Reaches 20-40 cm tall and 15-30 cm wide in pots, but can reach up to 1 m in optimal conditions, with tree-like branching at maturity.
  • Vigor : Slow but steady growth, with columnar stems that resemble a cactus, even though it is a succulent. It is compact and suitable for small spaces.
  • Type : Perennial, evergreen succulent plant.

Growing conditions

  • Exposure : Prefers bright indirect light or partial sun. Ideal near a south or east facing window. Can tolerate direct sun but should be protected from scorching in hot climates.
  • Soil : Grows in well-drained, sandy or rocky soil with a neutral pH (6.5-7.5). Use a cactus mix with perlite or vermiculite.
  • Watering : Water sparingly, once every 10-14 days, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which causes root rot.
  • Temperature : Hardy in zones 10-11 (down to 5°C). Prefers temperatures of 21-29°C during the day and 15°C at night. In Romania, it is grown as an indoor plant, protected from frost.

Care and resistance

  • Resistance : Very resistant to drought and neglect, but sensitive to excessive humidity. May be affected by mites or fungi; inspect regularly and treat with organic fungicides. Tolerates urban pollution well.
  • Fertilization : Does not require frequent fertilization. Apply a diluted cactus fertilizer (e.g. 3-1-2) once every 2 months in spring and summer, unless the plant has been repotted.
  • Pruning : Cut off damaged or dry branches with sterile tools to avoid infections. Handle with care due to toxic sap.
  • Propagation : Propagate by stem cuttings, cut and dried a few days before planting in moist substrate.
  • Warning : The milky white sap is toxic and irritating to skin and eyes. Wear gloves when handling and avoid contact with children or animals.

Euphorbia mayurnathanii f. variegata is ideal for succulent collections, decorative pots or rock gardens. Its variegated stems add a focal point to modern, minimalist or bohemian decors. It combines well with other succulents, such as aloe or agave, and is suitable for windowsills or terrariums.
