Euphorbia japonica (bupleurifolia x susannae) - Pine Cone Plant (caudex)
Euphorbia japonica (also known as Pine Cone Plant or Pineapple Euphorbia) is a hybrid featuring a spectacular caudex, resulting from the crossbreeding of Euphorbia bupleurifolia and Euphorbia susannae. It is one of the most appreciated caudex plants due to the unusual appearance of its thickened base, which resembles a pine cone or a pineapple.
The plant develops a compact caudex, round or slightly elongated in shape, with a distinctive texture similar to the scales of a pine cone. Above the caudex, small, fleshy, deep green leaves appear, forming a compact rosette. During periods of stress or dormancy, the leaves may fall off, leaving the caudex exposed – a very decorative effect for collectors.
Main features:
- Spectacular caudex shaped like a pine cone (main characteristic)
- Small, green, fleshy leaves
- Exotic and unusual appearance
- Slow to moderate growth
- Size: the caudex can reach 8–15 cm in diameter in mature potted plants
Easy care:
- Light: bright light with direct filtered sun in the morning or afternoon. It also tolerates bright semi-shade, but the caudex develops better in strong light.
- Temperature: warm. Optimal 18–28°C. Does not tolerate temperatures below 10°C for long periods (protect during winter).
- Watering: moderate during the growing season (spring–autumn). Allow the substrate to dry well between waterings. Water very rarely or not at all in winter (dry rest). It is more sensitive to overwatering than drought.
- Humidity: medium (tolerates dry indoor air well).
- Substrate: very well-drained, mineral, and airy.
Substrate recommendation: For optimal caudex development and to prevent rot, a mineral substrate with excellent drainage is recommended. → Professional substrate for cacti, succulents, and Adenium - Secret Garden
This substrate provides the ideal structure for caudex plants, with a high percentage of mineral components.
Uses: It is an excellent collector’s plant, perfect for decorative pots, large terrariums, display cases, or collections of succulents and caudex plants. It looks spectacular displayed without leaves or with the leaf rosette above the caudex. It is highly appreciated by enthusiasts of unusual plants.
Important note: Like all Euphorbia species, this plant contains a milky white latex that can irritate the skin and eyes. Wearing gloves when handling and avoiding contact with the face is recommended. It is not toxic if ingested in small amounts but should not be consumed.
Euphorbia japonica (Pine Cone Plant) is an excellent choice if you want a caudex plant with a dramatic look, easy to maintain, and very different from classic succulents. A gem for collectors!
