Graptopetalum filiferum
Full description and specifications
Graptopetalum filiferum is a succulent plant native to Mexico, also known as "Ghost Plant" or "String of Buttons". This plant has elongated and thin leaves, which form dense and branched rosettes.
Description:
- Form: Graptopetalum filiferum forms compact rosettes, composed of long, thin and fleshy leaves. The leaves are covered with a fine layer of whitish dust, which gives them a special appearance and protects them from the intense sun.
- Leaves: The leaves are juicy, lanceolate and have slightly curved edges. On the top, the leaves show thin threads, similar to some filaments, hence the name "filiferum" (with filaments).
- Color: The color of the leaves can vary from dark green to red, depending on the exposure to light. Under strong light, the leaves tend to take on reddish hues.
- Flowers: The flowers appear in spring or summer and are small, star-shaped, white-yellow or pale pink, with reddish spots. They form on thin stems and add extra attractiveness to the plant.
Care:
- Light: The plant prefers direct sun or partial shade. Exposure to intense sun can accentuate the reddish shades of the leaves, which enhances the decorative aspect of the succulent.
- Soil: Graptopetalum filiferum requires a well-drained soil, similar to the mixes used for cacti and succulents. A mixture of soil and sand or perlite is ideal to prevent water retention.
- Watering: Watering should be moderate, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. During the winter, watering should be reduced, because the plant enters the rest period.
- Temperature: It is a drought-resistant plant, preferring warm temperatures. It does not tolerate frost, therefore it must be protected if it is grown in areas with low temperatures.
Graptopetalum filiferum is a plant with low maintenance and a spectacular presence, being perfect for succulent collectors and for those who want a decorative indoor or outdoor plant.
