Huernia Blyderiverensis
Huernia blyderiverensis is an interesting succulent plant from the Apocynaceae family, originally from South Africa, where it grows in arid and stony environments. It is highly appreciated for its star-shaped flowers, with a unique appearance and contrasting color. Like other Huernia species, this plant is relatively easy to care for and brings an exotic element to any succulent collection.
Care
Light : Huernia blyderiverensis prefers strong indirect light. It can tolerate direct sunlight in the morning or late afternoon, but intense direct exposure can lead to burns of the stems.
Inside, it is ideal to be placed near a well-lit window or in a place where it can receive filtered light. Lack of light can reduce flowering and lead to elongated and pale growth.
Temperature : The plant prefers moderate temperatures, between 18-27°C during the day, being ideal for the indoor climate. During the rest period in winter, it can tolerate lower temperatures, but not lower than 10°C.
Avoid exposing Huernia to frost, as it cannot withstand temperatures below 10°C.
Watering : During the period of active growth (spring and summer), water the plant moderately, letting the soil dry completely between waterings. Avoid excessive watering, because the plant is very sensitive to excess water, which can cause root rot.
During the rest period (autumn and winter), significantly reduce watering, watering only enough to prevent the stems from completely drying out. As a rule, a light watering every 3-4 weeks is sufficient in the cold season.
Soil : Use a well-drained soil mixture, specific for cacti and succulents. An ideal mix contains potting soil combined with coarse sand, perlite or gravel to facilitate drainage and prevent excessive moisture retention.
Make sure the pot has drainage holes to avoid water pooling at the base.
Fertilization : During the period of active growth, you can apply a fertilizer for succulents and cacti once a month. A balanced fertilizer, low in nitrogen, is recommended to support the flowering and health of the plant.
During the rest period, fertilization is not necessary.
Replanting : Huernia blyderiverensis does not require frequent replanting, but you can replant it once every 2-3 years, or when the plant becomes too big for the current pot. Use a slightly larger pot and a fresh mix of soil.
The best time for replanting is at the beginning of spring, before the plant begins active growth.
Propagation : The plant is easily propagated by stem cuttings. Cut a healthy stem and let it dry out at the base for a few days before planting it in moist succulent soil. In a few weeks, the stem should develop roots.
Common problems :
Root rot : This is the most common problem, caused by excessive watering or poor drainage. It is important to let the soil dry completely between waterings. Lack of flowering : If the plant does not bloom, it may be due to the lack of light or the lack of a rest period in the cold season. Provide it with strong indirect light and a cooler environment in winter.
Attacks by pests : Can be affected by mealybugs and aphids. Treat infestations with insecticides for succulents or insecticidal soap.
