Epiphyllum rouge (Cactus Orchidée Type Rouge) D12

Epiphyllum Red Type is a spectacular variety of epiphytic cactus with intense red flowering, part of the Epiphyllum genus, also popularly known as "orchid cactus" due to its large and exotic flowers. Native to the tropical forests of Central and South America, this cactus differs from desert cacti by its flat foliage and abundant flowering under conditions of humidity and filtered light.

🔹 Botanical characteristics:

• Form: Epiphytic or semi-epiphytic plant, with flattened stems, long and jointed, which can reach over 50–100 cm in length. It has no true leaves; what looks like a leaf is actually a modified stem (cladode).

• Stems: Flat, wide, with slightly wavy or toothed edges, ranging from light green to dark green. They are flexible and can easily become curved or trailing.

• Flowers: Very large (up to 15–20 cm in diameter), cup- or star-shaped, intensely red, sometimes with orange or burgundy shades. They appear at the tips of the segments, usually in spring or summer. They are fragrant, short-lived (lasting 1–2 days), but flowering can recur in waves if the plant is well cared for.

🔹 Recommended growing conditions:

• Light: Prefers filtered, indirect but bright light. It can tolerate morning or afternoon sun but must be protected from strong sunburn.

• Soil: Aerated and well-drained, similar to that for epiphytic orchids or tropical cacti – a mix of peat, bark, perlite, and leaf mold.

• Watering: Moderate. Water when the top layer of soil is dry. During flowering and active growth, watering should be more consistent but without excess water. Reduce watering in winter.

• Humidity: Appreciates an environment with medium to high air moisture, typical of its natural habitat.

• Recommended temperatures: Grows well in warm conditions. Does not tolerate temperatures below 10°C. In regions with cold winters, keep indoors or in sheltered spaces.

• Fertilizing: Fertilize monthly during spring–summer with a diluted fertilizer for flowering plants.
