Garden Fern - Dryopteris erythrosora (Autumn Fern, Japanese Wood Fern)

Dryopteris erythrosora, often known as the copper shield fern, is a perennial plant distinguished by a number of notable characteristics

Appearance: Its young fronds have a beautiful red-bronze or copper hue, which gradually changes to dark green as they mature. This transformation may be influenced by the season.

Form: The fronds are finely divided and have an attractive shape, growing to heights of between 30 and 75 cm.

Habitat: Dryopteris erythrosora prefers partially shaded or fully shaded areas with well-drained but moist soil.

Cold hardiness: It is resistant to low temperatures and can survive in USDA zones 5–9. This means the plant can tolerate temperatures as low as -28.9°C, making it suitable for many regions with cold winters.

Maintenance: It is a low-maintenance plant that requires no special care once established.

Dryopteris erythrosora is valued for the beauty of its colorful fronds and its ability to add a splash of color to shaded areas of the garden, with the added benefit of its cold hardiness.
