Lonicera periclymenum 'Belgica' (also known as Garden Honeysuckle, Mother-of-the-Lord's Hand, Belgian Honeysuckle, Early Dutch Honeysuckle, Belgian Honeysuckle, or Woodbine) is a classic and highly appreciated climbing honeysuckle variety native to Europe. It is one of the most fragrant and floriferous honeysuckle varieties.

It is a vigorous woody climber with fast growth, reaching 4-6 meters in height. It climbs by twining and is ideal for pergolas, fences, trellises, trees, or balconies.

The leaves are oval, blue-green, opposite, semi-evergreen (in milder areas of Romania they remain green for much of the winter).

The flowers appear in successive waves from May to August-September. They are tubular, long, intense pink-red on the outside and creamy-yellow on the inside. They open at night and have a sweet, strong, and intoxicating fragrance, especially in the evening and at night – one of the most beautiful scents in the garden.

After flowering, small, round, bright red berries appear, very decorative in autumn and attractive to birds.

Main features:

  • Size: 4-6 meters tall
  • Flowering period: May – September (successive waves)
  • Fragrance: very intense and sweet (pronounced in the evening)
  • Fruits: decorative red berries, attractive to birds
  • Hardiness: good cold tolerance (down to -20°C / -25°C)

Easy care:

  • Light: full sun or partial shade (flowers more abundantly in sun)
  • Soil: any fertile, well-drained type
  • Watering: moderate; tolerates drought well once established
  • Pruning: after flowering (cut back flowering shoots)
  • Support: pergola, trellis, fence, arch, or tree

Lonicera periclymenum 'Belgica' is a classic and reliable choice if you want a climbing honeysuckle with beautiful flowers and a fragrance that fills your garden on summer evenings.

*In the cold season, the plant is sold leafless and pruned to encourage branching.

Garden or terrace plants are grown in unprotected or minimally protected spaces (shade nets or hail nets). For this reason, naturally, they may not have perfect foliage – leaves may show marks, defects, or other damage.
