Hoya sussuela - large and fragrant flowers

Hoya sussuela is a vigorous vine native from Malesia to northern Queensland, with large, cup-shaped, dark red, fragrant flowers. The foliage is elliptic and green, with a deeply recessed midrib. In cultivation, it grows quickly and usually produces long vines before its first flowering. It belongs to the Eriostemma horticultural group; the sales name remains Hoya sussuela. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are elliptic, thick, light to medium green, with a clearly recessed midrib. In cultivation, they are usually reported to be around 6–10 cm long. The vine is vigorous, branches readily, and can elongate easily. The lifestyle photograph shows a young specimen with a long vine and no flowers. A young specimen needs time before developing its mature growth habit. Vine length varies from one specimen to another.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are large for the genus, usually cup-shaped, and grouped in umbels with few flowers. In cultivation, up to 10 flowers per umbel have been reported, though there are usually fewer, each measuring approximately 4–5 cm. The corolla is dark red, with a lighter or yellowish center; the corona is yellow to reddish. The gallery includes an umbel of this type on a flowering plant, not from the lot for sale. The flowers are fragrant; intensity may vary. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The accepted botanical name is Hoya sussuela (Roxb.) Merr., published in 1917. The species is native to Borneo, the Moluccas, New Guinea, Queensland, and Sulawesi. Hoya ariadna Decne. is a synonym, not a separate species on this listing. In horticulture, it is placed in the Eriostemma section; Eriostemma sussuela / E. ariadna are group labels, not a separate genus here.
