Hoya obovata 'Variegata' is a cultivar of the species Hoya obovata, with true variegation: cream or yellow sectors in the middle of the leaf blade, surrounded by a green band. It is not silver splash and is not the green form of the species. The foliage is thick and obovate. The species is an epiphytic plant native to Thailand, Vietnam, Sulawesi, and Maluku, published in 1844. It produces umbels of white-pink flowers with a pink-red corona and fragrance. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Foliage and variegation. The leaves are opposite, firm, and broader toward the tip. The cream or yellow areas are tissue with less chlorophyll, not silver spots. In this batch, the pattern is internal, in the middle of the leaf blade; the width of the green band varies from one leaf to another, and some blades may be almost entirely green. The species is known as a “cactus hoya” because of its fleshy foliage, not as a watering guideline.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are waxy and grouped in umbels. The corolla is white to pale pink, with a deep pink to red corona in the center. They are fragrant. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The accepted botanical name of the species is Hoya obovata Decne., published in 1844. Its recognized native range is Thailand, Vietnam, Sulawesi, and Maluku. 'Variegata' is the label for this selection.
