Hoya mindorensis 'ut 042' *fragrant flowers

Hoya mindorensis UT 042 is a commercial lot of the species, marked with the collection number UT 042. The species is native from the Philippines to northern and central Borneo. It has flexible stems and glossy, oval-elongated leaves with visible veins. In bright light, the foliage may develop reddish tones; this coloration is not variegation. The flowers are borne in dense umbels, with reflexed corollas and fine hairs, and are described as fragrant. UT 042 is not a taxon and is not a registered cultivar. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Foliage and growth habit. The leaves are glossy, elliptic or oval-elongated, with a prominent midrib. In strong light, the leaf blade may turn reddish; this growing response is not variegation. The growth habit is that of an epiphytic vine. The stems can be trained onto a support or left trailing. Vine length varies from one specimen to another.

Flowers and fragrance. The umbels are compact and nearly spherical. The corolla reflexes backward and is covered with fine, translucent hairs. The corona is star-shaped. Lot UT 042 is described as having a purple corolla, a corona with purple tips and a yellow center, and a subtle fragrance. Coloration within the mindorensis complex varies; this collection number should not be confused with the Red, Red Star, Yellow, Lite yellow, or Purple Star forms. The species may flower even on relatively young plants. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The accepted botanical name is Hoya mindorensis Schltr., published in 1906. Its native range extends from the Philippines to northern and central Borneo; it is not limited to the Philippines. The title retains the selection ut 042.
