Hoya Mathilde (carnosa x serpens) - Fragrant Hoya D6

Hoya carnosa 'Mathilde' is the established horticultural hybrid resulting from the crossing of Hoya carnosa x Hoya serpens, created in Belgium by Emilio Begine. The foliage is compact, with small, almost round, firm leaves, often scattered with silver splashes. The growth habit is trailing or climbing and combines the robustness of Hoya carnosa with the smaller size inherited from Hoya serpens. Under good growing conditions, the plant produces umbels of small, cream-white to pale pink, finely pubescent flowers with a sweet fragrance.

Name and parentage. The established horticultural name is Hoya carnosa 'Mathilde'. The documented parentage is Hoya carnosa x Hoya serpens, with Hoya carnosa as the maternal parent. The hybrid appeared in the summer of 1994 through uncontrolled pollination in Emilio Begine's garden. Both parent species are botanically accepted. The hybrid formula in the title describes its origin, not a spontaneous species. Splash is not a separate cultivar; it only describes the density of the silver markings, which vary naturally.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are small, fleshy, almost round to oval, green, and densely arranged on thin vines. The silver splash markings vary in size and distribution and are not equivalent to variegation. A single specimen may simultaneously produce more heavily marked leaves and predominantly green leaves. Vine length and splash density vary from one specimen to another.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are small, star-shaped, and finely pubescent, ranging from cream-white to pale pink, and grouped in umbels. The fragrance is sweet and is reported to be easier to detect in the evening. The number of flowers, color, and fragrance intensity may vary depending on the plant's maturity and growing conditions.
