Hoya clemensiorum (short leaf)

Hoya clemensiorum (short leaf) is a label for plants of the species Hoya clemensiorum selected for shorter foliage than the long, dagger-shaped blades seen on mature specimens. The leaves are thick, deep green, with deeply recessed, almost sculptural veins. The species is a vine native to Borneo. Short leaf is not a separate taxon and is not the lot sold as sp. Sumatra. Under good growing conditions, star-shaped, cream flowers with burgundy-brown edges appear in umbels. The flowers are fragrant. Blooming depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Foliage. The foliage is firm and elliptic-lanceolate, with a prominent midrib and raised lateral veins that are darker against the green background. The short leaf form describes only the relative length of the blade. As the vine matures, the leaves may become longer. Some leaves in stock may have imperfections.

Flowers and fragrance. The species’ flowers are star-shaped, with reflexed lobes, creamy yellow toward the center and burgundy-brown at the edges, with a cream corona. They appear in dense umbels. They are fragrant; we do not assign a single definitive scent note. Blooming depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The accepted name is Hoya clemensiorum T.Green, published in 2001. Its native range is Borneo. Short leaf, Dark Leaf, and sp. Sumatra remain commercial labels for separate SKUs. This species should not be confused with unpublished Hoya sp. Aceh.
