Hoya cinnamomifolia var. purpureofusca (Hoya purpureofusca) - fragrant flowers

Hoya cinnamomifolia var. purpureofusca is the retained sales name for the burgundy-flowered form, also known as Hoya purpureofusca. The foliage is broad and green, with prominent cinnamon-type venation. The umbels in this batch are dense, with burgundy-metallic, nectar-producing star-shaped flowers. In current treatment, both names are synonyms of Hoya macrophylla. Hooker published cinnamomifolia in 1848 and purpureofusca in 1850.

Flowers and fragrance. The umbel is spherical and dense. The corolla and corona are burgundy-purple, with metallic reflections; the center may have a yellow tinge. The lime-green contrast of the typical form is absent. Nectar may be abundant. Horticultural sources describe the flowers as fragrant; perceived intensity varies. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The title retains Hoya cinnamomifolia var. purpureofusca (Hoya purpureofusca). Hooker published Hoya cinnamomifolia in 1848 (Bot. Mag. t. 4347) and Hoya purpureofusca in 1850 (Bot. Mag. t. 4520). 1848 is the publication date, not a discovery date. The commercial title remains unchanged. purpureofusca remains the color label for the burgundy umbels, distinct from the form with lime-green corollas sold as Hoya cinnamomifolia.
