Hoya carnosa 'Chelsea'

Hoya 'Chelsea' variegata is a collectible cultivar with thick, glossy foliage, noted for its compact growth and delicate flowers. It is distinguished by thick, cupped, ovate to cordate leaves, with paired indentations along the midrib and short internodes. The foliage is often a lighter green than that of the typical form of the species, with little or no splash. The vines can be trained on a support or left trailing. Under good growing conditions, it produces umbels of white to pale pink flowers, whose shade may vary depending on cultivation conditions.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are fleshy, slightly cupped, and vary from oval to nearly cordate. The paired indentations near the midrib and short internodes are useful identification characteristics. Splash, if present, is minimal. In cultivation, SG notes rapid growth; however, the internodes remain closer together than those of the typical form of the species.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers have the species' characteristic star shape and are grouped in umbels. Their color may range from pinkish white to pink, sometimes almost white, depending on growing conditions. They are usually fragrant, as with H. carnosa. A duration of approximately 7 days is a cultivation observation, not a botanical rule.
