Hoya carmelae - mature specimens

Hoya carmelae is a compact species native to the Philippines, sold here as established plants. The foliage is small, pubescent, rounded or oval, and turns red or burgundy when the plant receives good light. The stems are thin and can be allowed to grow trailing. Under good growing conditions, it produces umbels of small, intensely red, glossy flowers with reflexed lobes and a corona of the same dark red color. The flowers are fragrant. The height, including the pot, is approximately 10–15 cm. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Foliage and growth. The foliage is small, pubescent, and rounded or oval in shape. In low light, it remains green; in good light, it turns red, burgundy, or bronze, including along the stems. The growth habit is compact, with thin vines suitable for a hanging pot. The product is offered as established plants, not as cuttings with two or three leaves.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are small and star-shaped, grouped in umbels, intensely red and glossy, with reflexed lobes. The corona is the same dark red color. They are fragrant. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions; it is not guaranteed for this batch, which is sold without flowers.

Botanical identity and origin. Hoya carmelae Kloppenb., Siar & Ferreras is an accepted botanical name, published in 2010. The species is native to the Philippines. The type specimen was collected on Luzon, in Isabela Province, on Mount Pinalinaw, at approximately 1,100 m. It grows in a humid tropical biome.
