Hoya benguetensis

Hoya benguetensis is a species native to the Philippines, with elongated foliage and prominent veins. The narrow, glossy leaves can reach up to 17 cm and develop reddish or burgundy tones in bright, filtered light. Under good growing conditions, it produces umbels of orange to red flowers with a darker corona. The flowers are fragrant, with a medium-intensity scent that is difficult to describe, and last from a few days to approximately one week. The plant can be trained onto a support or allowed to trail.

Foliage and growth. The foliage is long, narrow, and glossy, with clearly defined veins. In bright light, the leaves may change from green to reddish; the color often returns toward green when light levels decrease. It has an epiphytic, vining growth habit and needs a support to be guided onto, as it does not twine easily on its own.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers have orange or yellow-orange corollas and a darker pinkish-red corona. They appear in umbels of approximately 10–20 flowers, initially almost flat and later slightly reflexed. They are fragrant, with a medium-intensity scent that is difficult to describe; the duration of a bloom varies from a few days to approximately one week, depending on the microclimate.

Botanical identity and origin. Hoya benguetensis Schltr. is an accepted botanical name, published in 1906. The species is native to Luzon, Philippines, where it grows as an epiphyte in a humid tropical biome.
