Stromanthe sanguinea 'Triostar', frequently marketed under the name Calathea Triostar, is a spectacular tropical plant from the Marantaceae family, prized for its variegated foliage in shades of green, creamy white, and pink. The undersides of the leaves display intense pink, purplish-red to burgundy tones, enhancing the plant's decorative appearance from every angle.

The leaves are elongated and elegant, with varying variegation patterns, so each leaf may feature a distinct design. Like other plants in the Marantaceae family, the leaves may subtly change position throughout the day in response to light.

It is a plant that thrives in stable tropical conditions: filtered light, warm temperatures, good atmospheric humidity, and a substrate that remains slightly moist but airy.

🌿 Botanical characteristics:

  • Scientific name: Stromanthe sanguinea 'Triostar'

  • Common name: Calathea Triostar

  • Family: Marantaceae

  • Plant type: perennial tropical plant, valued for its decorative foliage.

  • Elongated leaves with green, creamy white, and pink variegation.

  • The undersides of the leaves range from pink-purple to burgundy.

  • The variegation pattern differs from one leaf to another.

  • Erect growth, gradually forming a full clump.

  • The plant develops through rhizomes.

🌞 Growing conditions:

  • Light: prefers bright, indirect or filtered light. Insufficient light may reduce the contrast of the variegation, while strong direct sunlight can cause leaf scorch.

  • Substrate: loose, rich in organic matter, and well-draining, while still able to retain moderate moisture.

  • Watering: regularly; the substrate should be kept slightly moist without remaining waterlogged. Allow the surface layer to dry slightly between waterings.

  • Water quality: Plants in the Marantaceae family can be sensitive to salt buildup from water. If tap water is very hard, using filtered water or rainwater may be helpful.

  • Humidity: prefers high atmospheric humidity. Very dry air can encourage the edges and tips of the leaves to dry out.

  • Temperature: prefers consistent temperatures of approximately 18–28°C. Avoid cold, drafts, and sudden temperature fluctuations.

  • Fertilization: moderate during the active growth period, using a fertilizer for tropical plants grown for their foliage.

✨ What makes it special:

  • spectacular three-color foliage: green, cream, and pink;

  • the undersides of the leaves display intense pink-purple shades;

  • each leaf develops a different variegation pattern;

  • the leaves may change position according to the daily light cycle;

  • gradually forms a lush, highly decorative tropical clump;

  • spectacular appearance even without flowers.

📌 Note: The intensity of the colors, the proportion of cream, green, and pink areas, and the variegation pattern naturally vary from one specimen to another and between the leaves of the same plant. Specimens may be delivered with fuller or sparser foliage, depending on their stage of development and the season. Stromanthe 'Triostar' is sensitive to changes in humidity, temperature, and environmental conditions, and during the acclimatization period it may develop dry edges or tips, curled leaves, spots, discoloration, or lose some leaves. The leaves may also have small tears, scratches, or bends caused by handling and transport. These cosmetic imperfections do not normally affect the plant’s viability, and it may continue to produce new leaves after acclimatization.
