Athyrium filix-femina 'Victoriae' (Lady fern) – garden fern

Athyrium filix-femina 'Victoriae' is an ornamental fern cultivar, valued for its fine, elegant, and unusual foliage. It is commonly known as Lady Fern 'Victoriae' or, in Romanian, Feriga doamnei, and what sets it apart are its narrow pinnules, arranged in a way that creates a distinctive, almost cruciform effect on the fronds.

The plant forms a compact clump, with arching to upright, light green fronds. It is a deciduous fern, so its foliage dies back during the cold season, and the plant regrows from the rhizome in spring.

Athyrium filix-femina 'Victoriae' is a fern that is highly resistant to cold. The RHS classifies it as H6, corresponding to a tolerance of approximately -20...-15°C.

In Romania, well-established plants can overwinter outdoors in most areas, especially in well-drained soil and a sheltered position. The foliage naturally disappears during winter, and the plant regrows from the rhizome in spring.

Plants grown in containers are more exposed to root-system freezing and benefit from additional protection during periods of severe frost.

🌱 Recommended growing medium

For Athyrium filix-femina 'Victoriae', we recommend a fertile, organic-rich, moist, and well-drained growing medium that retains sufficient moisture without remaining permanently waterlogged. Adding garden compost or leaf mould is beneficial for plants grown in the garden.

📌 Note

This fern is deciduous. In autumn, the fronds naturally turn yellow and dry out, and the above-ground part may disappear completely during winter. This process is normal and does not indicate that the plant has been lost; the rhizome remains alive and produces new fronds in spring.

The fronds are delicate and may show minor tears, bends, dry tips, spots, or other aesthetic imperfections resulting from growth, handling, transportation, or adaptation to new environmental conditions. These aspects do not normally affect the plant's viability.
