Super Dwarf Banana Plant - Musa acuminata 'Tropicana' (Super Dwarf Cavendish)

Musa acuminata ‘Tropicana’ is a very dwarf variety of banana plant, valued for its delicious fruits as well as for its ornamental and exotic look given by its spectacular leaves. It is a plant suitable both for growing in pots and in gardens in regions with mild climates.

The maximum height of this plant allows indoor cultivation.

Plant characteristics

• Maximum height: Approximately 1.5 – 2 meters at maturity, making it more compact than other Musa acuminata varieties.

• Leaves: Large, broad, of an intense green, sometimes with reddish or purplish shades on the underside.

• Growth: Fast, under optimal conditions it can reach maximum height in a few months.

• Cold resistance: It is sensitive to temperatures below 5°C, and at 0°C the leaves begin to deteriorate. The rhizome survives the winter in milder climates (such as southern Romania) if well protected.

• If the rhizome is protected, it can survive low temperatures, but it is not as hardy as Musa basjoo.

Fruit characteristics

• Size: The fruits are relatively small, about 10-12 cm long and 2-3 cm in diameter.

• Shape: Classic, elongated, slightly curved, similar to the common bananas found in supermarkets.

• Color: Green when unripe, turning golden yellow at maturity.

• Pulp: Soft and seedless (or with very small and rare seeds). Creamy texture, similar to commercial bananas.

• Taste: Sweet, fragrant, similar to ordinary bananas, but can be slightly more tart. The fruit is considered pleasant to taste, suitable for eating raw or using in various dishes.

Uses and advantages

• Ornamental: Its decorative leaves make it a popular choice in exotic gardens or as a houseplant.

• Edible fruits: Unlike Musa Basjoo, the fruits of Musa acuminata ‘Tropicana’ are pleasant to taste and free of hard seeds.

Note: Generally, the leaves of this plant are very fragile and show defects/damage or may break - this is considered normal for a banana plant, and the plant grows very quickly. As it develops, this variety loses its lower leaves.
