Hoya aff. villosa (Cao Dang, Vietnam)

Hoya aff. villosa 'Cao Dang Vietnam' is a collector's plant kept under an affinity label rather than a definitive botanical identification. It stands out for its thick, velvety foliage, deeply raised veins, and slightly wavy margins. The vines have a climbing habit, and horticultural material sold under this name is associated with the Hoya globulosa/villosa complex. The name 'Cao Dang Vietnam' should be retained as a commercial provenance label and should not automatically be interpreted as a verified botanical locality.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are thick, oblong to elliptic, covered with fine hairs, and marked by prominent lateral veins that give them a textured, slightly wavy appearance. The plant produces robust, climbing vines that can be trained onto a support. The foliage is the main decorative feature of young specimens.

Flowers and fragrance. Plants in the Hoya globulosa/villosa complex may produce globular umbels with cream or pale yellow flowers and pinkish-brown accents in the center. The flowers are reported to be fragrant, but the open identification indicated by “aff.” does not allow all floral characteristics to be guaranteed for this line before flowering.

Commercial provenance. 'Cao Dang Vietnam' circulates in exactly this form and is retained as the provenance label of the horticultural line. Some listings instead use 'Cao Bang', the name of a province in northern Vietnam, but no primary source has been found demonstrating that the two labels refer to the same collection.
