Echinocereus rigidissimus var. rubispinus - Red-Spined Rainbow Cactus
Echinocereus rigidissimus var. rubispinus, commonly known as the Red-Spined Rainbow Cactus or Ruby Rainbow Cactus, is a spectacular Mexican cactus, especially valued for its extremely dense spination, arranged regularly around the stem and coloured in shades of pink, ruby red, purple and cream. Its orderly, almost geometric appearance makes it easy to recognize and highly attractive in collections.
It is a variety of the species Echinocereus rigidissimus, characterized by more intensely coloured spines and a strong contrast between the young, vividly coloured areas and the more mature parts of the plant. The stem is usually solitary and cylindrical, while the ribs are completely covered with short, very closely spaced radial spines.
In spring or early summer, mature specimens may produce large, highly decorative flowers in intense shades ranging from pink-magenta to purple, appearing near the top of the stem.

☀️ Growing conditions and care
-
Light: prefers a very bright position with several hours of direct sunlight. Good exposure supports compact growth and intense spine colouring. Plants grown in a greenhouse should be gradually acclimatized to strong sunlight.
-
Growing medium: very airy, mineral-based and with excellent drainage. It is sensitive to stagnant water around the roots.
-
Watering: moderate during the active growing period; the growing medium should be allowed to dry out thoroughly between waterings.
-
Winter: keep much drier, especially when maintained at lower temperatures.
-
Humidity: prefers dry to moderate air and good air circulation.
-
Temperature: appreciates high temperatures during the active growing period.
-
Cold tolerance: may tolerate below-freezing temperatures for short periods if kept completely dry; however, potted specimens should be protected from persistent frost and cold moisture.
-
Fertilization: light to moderate during the growing period, using fertilizer for cacti and succulents.
