Senecio Herreianus (Planta mazare, Sirag de margele)

Senecio herreianus , also known by the popular names "String of Watermelons" or "String of Beads" , is a hanging succulent plant in the Asteraceae family, related to Senecio rowleyanus, but with slightly different leaves. It is an excellent choice for hanging pots, succulent arrangements or modern decor, due to its unique leaves and graphic appearance.

🔹 Botanical characteristics:

• Habit: Creeping or hanging plant, with thin, long and flexible stems, which can reach over 1 meter in length . Ideal for growing in hanging pots or on high shelves.

• Leaves: Fleshy, oval-elongated , with a slightly pointed tip, light green to deep green , marked with fine, translucent stripes , similar to those of a watermelon – hence the name “String of Watermelons”. The leaves are arranged alternately along the stem.

• Flowers: Small, lilac-white or cream , with a tubular shape and a sweet scent, appearing in the warm season, but less often in indoor conditions.

🔹 Recommended growing conditions:

• Light: Preference for bright indirect light . Without sufficient light, the plant becomes elongated and the leaves lose their color intensity and compact shape.

• Watering: Reduced. Water only when the substrate is completely dry , as with all succulents. Excess water leads to rotting of the roots and stems.

• Soil: Very well drained - substrate for cacti and succulents, with the addition of perlite, sand or fine gravel.

• Temperature: It tolerates heat well, but must be protected from cold and frost. In the cold season, it is kept indoors, in a bright and thermally stable place.

• Humidity: It does not need high humidity. It prefers dry and well-ventilated air.

• Fertilization: Can be fertilized once a month during the growing season (spring-summer), with a weak fertilizer for succulents.
