Rhipsalis cassutha, also known as "Mistletoe Cactus" or "Chain Cactus", is a species of epiphytic cactus native to the tropical regions of South America. It is valued for its distinctive appearance, having slender stems that hang gracefully and create an impressive decorative effect.

General characteristics:

  • Stems: Slender, cylindrical, and soft, growing linked together to form a dense network. They can reach lengths of up to 1-1.5 meters. The stems are light green, and under strong light conditions, they may take on slightly yellowish hues.
  • Leaves: It does not have true leaves, only stem segments that perform photosynthesis.
  • Flowers: Produces small, white or yellowish, delicate flowers that appear on the stem segments. The flowers are followed by small, round, translucent fruits resembling pearls.
  • Size: It is a medium-sized plant, ideal for hanging or placing in elevated pots.

Care:

  1. Light:

    • Prefers indirect light, moderate to strong. Suitable for semi-shaded places.
    • Does not tolerate direct sunlight for long periods, which can cause burns.
  2. Watering:

    • Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Being an epiphytic cactus, it prefers constant but not excessive moisture.
    • In winter, reduce watering frequency, adapting to the plant’s seasonal needs.
  3. Humidity:

    • Likes a humid environment, so occasional misting or placing the pot near a moisture source is beneficial.
  4. Soil:

    • Needs a well-drained, airy substrate. A mix for orchids combined with cactus soil is ideal.
  5. Temperature:

    • Thrives at temperatures between 18-26°C. Does not tolerate extreme cold or temperatures below 10°C.
  6. Fertilizing:

    • Apply a liquid fertilizer for cacti once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
  7. Pruning:

    • If necessary, stems can be pruned to maintain the desired shape and encourage branching.
