Hoya sp. aff. burtoniae 'Variegata' - mature specimens

Hoya sp. aff. burtoniae 'Variegata' is the horticultural name used for an unpublished Philippine Hoya species-level entity, similar in appearance to Hoya burtoniae but distinct from it. It has a compact, trailing growth habit, while its pubescent foliage may combine green, cream, pink, and reddish tones on new growth. The small, dark red flowers have a yellow corona and a sweet fragrance described as honey-like or caramel-like. The variegation gives each vine and each specimen its own unique pattern.

Name and identification. The abbreviation sp. aff. burtoniae indicates a plant that has not been definitively identified but shows affinities with Hoya burtoniae; it does not represent the name of a published species. The names Hoya bilobata and Hoya tsangii have been incorrectly applied to this plant.

'Variegata' is the commercial name for the variegated form. The plant should not be confused with Hoya burtoniae, a botanically accepted species that usually has smaller, thinner leaves with less prominent venation.

Foliage and variegation. The leaves are pubescent, relatively thick, and pointed, with visible venation. Green areas alternate with cream or white sections, while new growth may temporarily display pink to reddish tones. The intensity and distribution of the variegation vary naturally; some vines may partially or completely revert to green.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are small and nearly spherical, with dark pink to red corollas and yellow coronas with reddish centers. They are grouped in compact umbels, produce nectar, and have a sweet fragrance with caramel or honey-like notes. Flowering depends on the plant's maturity and growing conditions.

Note: Vine length varies from one specimen to another. The same pot may contain both variegated vines and vines that have reverted to green or lack variegation.
