Hoya pubicalyx 'Jungle Garden' - fragrant

Hoya marketed as Hoya pubicalyx 'Jungle Garden' is a cultivar with a climbing habit and variable foliage, often resembling Hoya carnosa. The vines can be trained on a support or allowed to grow trailing. It produces umbels with star-shaped flowers, reported in horticulture as pink and fragrant, but the color and form may vary from one batch to another. Jungle Garden is not a botanical taxon; it is a selection label of unclear origin.

Foliage and growth. The foliage is variable. Some descriptions compare it to Hoya carnosa; others find it different from the rest of the H. pubicalyx selections and compare it to Hoya motoskei. The leaves may redden slightly in sunlight. We do not treat this pattern as variegation and do not promise an identical pattern on every leaf.

Flowers and fragrance. In horticulture, material sold as 'Jungle Garden' is associated with fragrant, pink, star-shaped flowers, sometimes described as less intense than those of other H. pubicalyx selections. The origin of the selection is unknown, and some sources treat it as a possible H. pubicalyx × H. carnosa hybrid, without evidence. The flowers may vary in color and form: they may resemble carnosa, pubicalyx, or a combination of the two.

Horticultural identity. Hoya pubicalyx Merr. is an accepted species, published in 1918, native to Luzon, the Philippines, where it grows as a vine in a humid tropical biome. 'Jungle Garden' circulates as a selection, attributed to a grower in California and described as slightly different from 'Pink Silver'. Plant lists sometimes also place it under Hoya carnosa. The product's commercial title is retained; we do not silently correct the parentage.
