Hoya bella 'Anneke Buis' (white-margined)

Hoya bella 'Anneke Buis' (albomarginata) is a cultivar with marginal variegation: the centre of the leaf remains green, while the edge is cream or white. It appeared as a spontaneous mutation in the 1980s, in the Buis family’s greenhouses in Aalsmeer. The foliage is small and oval-lanceolate, borne on thin, pendulous shoots. It produces umbels of white, star-shaped flowers with pink or purple coronas. The flowers are fragrant. The species is native from Assam to Myanmar, where it grows as a climbing epiphytic vine, often among low shrubs.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are small, glossy, oval or lanceolate. The light-coloured band runs along the edge; the centre remains green. The width of the margin varies from leaf to leaf, and in good light the foliage may develop warmer tones. The growth habit is compact and pendulous: the shoots are allowed to trail rather than being trained onto a tall support.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are star-shaped and white, with pink or purple coronas, grouped in pendulous umbels. They are described as identical to those of the green form. They are fragrant, although the intensity may vary. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Botanical identity and origin. Hoya bella Hook. is an accepted botanical name, published in 1848.
