Full description and specifications

Gymnocalycium bruchii is a small cactus, originally from Argentina, known for its compact appearance and colorful flowers. Here is a description and some care tips:

Description:

  • Shape : It is a globular cactus, usually with a diameter of about 3-5 cm. Sometimes it can form small groups of plants.
  • Color : The body is green or blue-green, covered with pronounced ribs.
  • Thorns : The thorns are short, white or yellow, and are not very aggressive, which gives them a decorative appearance.
  • Flowers : Gymnocalycium bruchii produces large flowers in relation to the size of the plant, pink, white or sometimes light red. The flowers appear in summer and last for a few days.
  • Roots : It has fibrous roots, which allows it to survive in poorer soils.

Care:

  1. Light : This species prefers bright places, but not direct exposure to strong sunlight during the summer, because it can cause burns on the surface of the cactus. It is ideal to be kept in a bright place, but with filtered sun.

  2. Temperature : Gymnocalycium bruchii tolerates lower temperatures, even down to approximately 0°C, if it is kept completely dry. Ideally, the optimal temperature during the summer is between 18-26°C.

  3. Watering : Watering should be moderate, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Avoid excessive watering, as the roots may rot. During the winter, it is recommended to keep it dry, thus reducing the risk of rotting.

  4. Soil : Prefer a well-drained soil, especially for cacti, that contains sand and gravel to allow water to drain. Avoid using a soil that is too rich in organic matter, because this can lead to the accumulation of moisture.

  5. Fertilization : Fertilization can be done once a month during the growth period (spring and summer) with a special fertilizer for cacti, low in nitrogen, to avoid too fast growth or deformation of the plant.

  6. Replanting This cactus can be transplanted every 2-3 years to renew the soil and prevent root compaction.

  7. Flowering : To stimulate flowering, it is important to provide a rest period during the winter, with lower temperatures and no watering. This will help the plant to conserve its energy and produce flowers in the following season.

Gymnocalycium bruchii is relatively easy to care for, being suitable for both beginners and experienced cactus collectors.
