Thymus praecox, commonly known as creeping thyme, mother of thyme, or wild thyme, is a low-growing perennial native to central, southern, and western Europe. It forms a dense carpet, 5–15 cm tall, with creeping shoots that root easily and flower abundantly.

The leaves are small, round, slightly hairy, blue-green, and aromatic (thyme-scented). Small, tubular flowers in shades of pink, violet, or white appear in summer (June–September), attracting bees and butterflies. It is an excellent ground cover plant, tolerant of light foot traffic, drought, and poor soils.

Main characteristics:

  • Dense, creeping carpet, 5–15 cm tall
  • Aromatic leaves, evergreen in mild winters
  • Abundant summer flowering
  • Drought- and frost-resistant (approx. zone 5, -20…-25°C)
  • Ideal for rock gardens, borders, between paving stones

Easy care:

  • Light: full sun (at least 6 hours). It grows less vigorously and flowers less in partial shade.
  • Temperature: very hardy. In Romania, it overwinters without problems if the soil is well-drained.
  • Watering: low. Once established, water infrequently; it tolerates drought. Avoid standing water.
  • Soil: poor, sandy, or rocky, very well-drained. Does not tolerate heavy, wet soils.
  • Pruning: after flowering, it can be lightly trimmed to maintain a dense shape.

Excellent as ground cover, between stepping stones, in rock gardens, herb gardens, low borders, and pots. The leaves can be used in small amounts in cooking (like thyme). Attracts pollinators.

Note: Do not confuse it with Thymus vulgaris (classic kitchen thyme, which grows taller). Thymus praecox is the creeping, more ornamental variety. It rots easily in constantly wet/moist soil.

An aromatic creeping thyme, easy to grow, that quickly forms a green carpet with pink-violet flowers.

Height including pot: approx. 10 cm

The plant’s appearance changes depending on the season, leaf maturity, pruning, etc..
