Begonia grandis, commonly known as rustic begonia, perennial garden begonia, or Hardy Begonia, is one of the few begonias that can be successfully grown in the garden year-round in many regions of Romania. It is valued for its decorative foliage, often with reddish reflections on the underside, and for its delicate pink flowers, which appear from late summer and continue into autumn.

Its elegant and natural appearance makes it ideal for shaded gardens, woodland areas, borders, or cooler corners where many other flowering plants struggle to thrive.

🌱 Botanical characteristics:

  • Family: Begoniaceae
  • Plant type: decorative perennial for foliage and flowers
  • Common names: rustic begonia, perennial garden begonia, Hardy Begonia
  • Growth habit: erect, bushy growth
  • Leaves: large, heart-shaped, deep green with reddish underside
  • Flowers: small, delicate, light pink shades
  • Blooming period: from August until the first frosts

💧 Growing and care conditions:

  • Light: prefers partial shade or bright shade
  • Watering: moderate; soil should be kept slightly moist
  • Substrate: rich in organic matter, fertile, and well-drained
  • Humidity: prefers soil that does not dry out completely for long periods
  • Temperature: optimal growth range: 15-28°C
  • Maintenance: aerial parts dry out in autumn and reappear in spring from underground tubers
  • Frost resistance: up to approximately -15 / -20°C under good conditions and with a protective mulch layer; in very cold areas, additional winter protection is recommended

🌱 Secret Garden recommendation:

For vigorous growth, plant Begonia grandis in humus-rich, well-drained soil in a spot sheltered from strong midday sun.

What makes it special:

  • one of the few frost-resistant begonias
  • blooms late summer when many other plants have finished their season
  • decorative foliage with reddish underside
  • ideal for shaded and natural gardens
  • easily propagated by bulbils formed at the base of the leaves

📌 Note: The plant’s appearance varies significantly depending on the season. In spring, it may start growing later, and during cold periods, the aerial parts disappear completely. This behavior is normal for the species and does not affect the plant’s viability. Depending on the time of year, specimens may be delivered without flowers.
