Hoya nabawanensis (splash leaves)

Hoya nabawanensis (splash leaves) is a species native to Sabah, on the island of Borneo. The “splash leaves” label describes the silver spots on the leaves and does not indicate a separate cultivar. Mature specimens have elongated leaves, up to 12 cm long and 4 cm wide, with silver splash patterns of varying density. Under good growing conditions, it forms dense umbels with pubescent, creamy white to pink flowers and a yellow corona. The flowers are fragrant and last approximately one week.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are ovate or ovate-lanceolate, green, with reflective silver spots. The splash is not an area lacking chlorophyll; it is a silver marking that may be more subtle or denser from one leaf to another. The plant has an epiphytic or lithophytic vining habit. In cultivation, its growth is often compared to Hoya memoria: the plant is considered easy to train onto a support or leave trailing.

Flowers and fragrance. The umbels can contain up to approximately 30 small flowers. The corolla is creamy white with a pink tint and is finely pubescent, while the corona is yellow. The flowers are fragrant; perceived intensity may vary. A bloom generally lasts approximately 7 days.

Botanical identity and origin. Hoya nabawanensis Kloppenb. & Wiberg is an accepted botanical name, published in 2002 following the collection of material in Nabawan, Sabah. The species is native to Sabah, on Borneo, where it grows as an epiphyte or lithophyte in humid hill forests. The cultivation comparison with Hoya memoria does not indicate synonymy.
