Hoya latifolia sp. ‘Sarawak’ (cream flower)

Hoya sp. Sarawak GPS 10073 'Cream', marketed under the name Hoya latifolia sp. 'Sarawak' (cream flower), is a collectible climbing Hoya valued for its very large, thick and glossy leaves. The foliage is broad, ranging from oval to almost round, with prominent veins and silver splash markings. This selection is kept for its open, cream to opalescent pink, fragrant flowers, which are rich in nectar.

Foliage and growth. The leaves have a firm texture, a rounded base and a pronounced veined pattern. The size, shape and amount of splash naturally vary between leaves. The plant produces vigorous vines that should be trained on a sturdy support and handled carefully to avoid breaking the long growths.

Flowers and fragrance. Published observations for accession GPS 10073 describe fragrant, opalescent pink flowers with abundant nectar production and a duration of approximately five days. The Cream label is retained for this selection, but the perceived color may vary from cream-pink to pale pink depending on the light, flower maturity and the horticultural line distributed under this name.

Horticultural name and origin. GPS 10073 is the collection number associated with Gerard Paul Shirley and was published by him as Hoya sp. Sarawak 97002, an unidentified species from Borneo. Hoya latifolia G.Don is an accepted species, native to areas including Borneo, but the primary sources consulted do not demonstrate that GPS 10073 belongs to it. Therefore, Sarawak and Cream are treated here as horticultural labels, not as botanical ranks or registered cultivars.
