Hoya juannguoiana

Hoya juannguoiana is the selected form of the accepted species Hoya juannguoana Kloppenb., published in 2002 from material collected in Palawan, Philippines. The foliage can become large and glossy, with shades of green and subtle splash; the leaves are often slightly folded along the midrib. The flowers are small and reflexed, cream-colored with pinkish-red tips and a white corona, strongly fragrant, with a spicy note that is difficult to describe. It was previously sold as Hoya sp. Philippines 1. It is not Hoya incrassata.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are obovate or ovate-lanceolate, glossy, with a lighter-colored underside. Their size varies considerably in cultivation, from medium-sized blades to very large leaves. Subtle silver spots or splash and differences in green between nodes may appear; this is not variegation. The leaf blade is often slightly cupped along the midrib. It has a climbing vine habit, with stems that become woody over time. In the photographed batch, some leaves have spots or mechanical marks. The styling photos show a decorative pot; the decorative pot is not included in the price.

Flowers and fragrance. The umbels are dense, with small, reflexed flowers. The corolla is creamy white or beige, with pink or reddish tips; the corona is white. In cultivation, an umbel may have between 20 and 50 flowers. The fragrance is strong and difficult to describe, generally spicy; its intensity increases when more umbels are open. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The published and accepted name is Hoya juannguoana Kloppenb., Fraterna 15(2): 15 (2002), named in honor of Ju Ann Guo. The type was collected at St. Paul's Underground River, Palawan. The protologue places it close to Hoya finlaysonii Wight, not Hoya incrassata Warb. It is nevertheless compared with incrassata because of its large foliage and small flowers; they remain separately accepted species. The old label Hoya sp. Philippines 1 is not a taxon.
