Hoya callistophylla D9

Hoya callistophylla is an epiphytic vine native to Borneo, cultivated for its thick foliage, with dark green pinnate veins on a green background. Mature leaves can reach approximately 25 cm in length and 9 cm in width. The shoots can become long, although growth is fairly slow. Under good growing conditions, umbels with small, pale yellow to cream or golden flowers, slightly fragrant, may appear. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Foliage and growth. The foliage is thick, firm, elliptical or lanceolate, with prominent veins. On young leaves, the veins may be paler and then darken, without developing the almost black venation of the commercial selection 'Black Cat'. A mature specimen can form long vines, but the plants in this batch have not yet reached the species’ maximum size.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are small and star-shaped, grouped in umbels containing several dozen flowers. The colour described in cultivation sources is pale yellow, cream or golden, sometimes with brownish shades. They are fragrant, with a light scent. An individual flower lasts only a short time on the plant. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. Hoya callistophylla T.Green is an accepted botanical name, published in 2000. The species is native to Borneo, where it grows as a vine in a humid tropical biome.

Height including the pot: approximately 15–20 cm.

Note: Some specimens may have leaves with cosmetic defects.
