Oreocereus trollii (known as Old Man of the Andes) is a spectacular collector’s cactus, instantly recognized by its long, whitish “fur” that covers the stems like soft hair. This covering is not just decorative: it helps the plant protect itself from strong sunlight and large temperature differences. Over time, it forms columnar stems with a dramatic appearance, ideal for large cactus collections and minimalist decor.

🌵 Botanical characteristics:

  • Family: Cactaceae

  • Botanical name: Oreocereus trollii

  • Common name (RO): “old man” cactus, Old Man of the Andes

  • Appearance: columnar cactus, densely covered with fine whitish hairs/spines; grows slowly inside and remains compact for a long time

  • Spines: partially hidden by the “hair,” but there are harder spines underneath

  • Flowers: generally appear on mature plants; color varies (usually warm tones), and flowering indoors can be rare

☀️ Growing and care conditions:

  • Light: very bright light; also tolerates direct sun (gradual acclimation). Good light keeps the shape compact

  • Watering: infrequent; water only after the substrate is completely dry; minimal watering in winter, especially if kept cooler

  • Temperature (optimal): 18–30°C during the season; prefers a cooler, dry rest period in winter

  • Substrate: very well-drained, predominantly mineral; pot with mandatory drainage

  • Attention: avoid persistent moisture on the “hair” and lack of ventilation (can cause problems)

🌱 Secret Garden recommendation:

For excellent drainage and healthy roots, use Secret Garden professional substrate for Cacti, Succulents & Adenium.

Advantages and uses:

  • Unique, “furry” look with strong decorative effect

  • Perfect for collections and bright spaces, where it becomes a focal point

  • Easy maintenance if given good light and controlled watering

📌 Note: The density of the “hair” and shape can naturally vary between specimens. Small aesthetic marks or slightly “flattened” areas of the hairs may appear after handling and transport, without affecting the plant’s viability.

The displayed price is for a plant without flowers.
