Hoya pachyclada

Hoya pachyclada is an accepted species, published by Kerr in 1939. It is native to Indochina: Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. The foliage is thick, fleshy, and obovate, borne on short, thick stems; the epithet means “thick shoots.” It has a compact, epiphytic subshrub habit. The flowers are borne in almost spherical umbels, cream-white, with an open corona and often a warmer-colored center. They are fragrant. Care is simple, and the plant grows steadily.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are thick, leathery, and obovate, with a cuneate base and rounded tip. The green color is saturated; the veins may be visible, and the margins may develop a reddish tint in strong light.

Flowers and fragrance. The umbels are dense and almost globular. The corolla is waxy, cream-white to pale yellow, with lobes that reflex as the flowers open. The corona is white or cream, often with a warmer-colored center, yellow or reddish. In this batch, one compact, cream-colored umbel has a yellow-orange center. The flowers are fragrant; the exact note varies in horticultural accounts, so we do not define it. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The native range is Indochina. The title retains Hoya pachyclada.
