Hoya finlaysonii (Sabah)

Hoya finlaysonii (Sabah) is a collector’s plant sold with the geographical designation “Sabah”, appreciated for its firm, elongated leaves and contrasting network of dark veins. “Sabah” indicates the location where this form of the plant was collected. The foliage may also have irregularly distributed silver splash markings on the leaves (splash). A rewarding houseplant with simple care requirements. The contrasting veins create a unique pattern.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are elliptical to elongated, thick and rigid, light green, with a dark green midrib and secondary veins. The vein network is the main ornamental feature, while the silver splash may be subtle or more pronounced from one leaf to another. The plant has a climbing habit and produces vines that can be trained onto a support.

Flowers and fragrance. It produces umbels of small, cream to pale yellow flowers, with burgundy or purple corolla tips and a light-colored corona. Horticultural sources indicate that the flowers last for up to approximately 3 days. The fragrance is often described in cultivation as sweet and spicy or reminiscent of cinnamon, but its perception may vary.

Botanical identity and origin. The accepted name is Hoya finlaysonii Wight, published in 1834. The species is a climbing epiphyte native from southern Thailand to western Malesia, including the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo. Sabah lies within the accepted range of the species, and the label indicates the general area of origin.

Flowering in cultivation. The species prefers a warm and stable microclimate. Sudden temperature changes, drafts or very dry air may encourage bud drop. A peduncle that has lost its buds may remain active and produce a new series, so it should not be removed while it is green and healthy.
